HOLLYWOOD—Actor Robert Redford, known for his roles in the films “All The President’s Men” has died at the age of 89. The actor died at his home, in Provo, Utah, surrounded by family.

Redford was known as Hollywood’s ‘Golden Boy’ during his career, and he was the founder of the popular, Sundance Film Festival. Redford got his start in Hollywood in TV with appearances on “Maverick,” “Rescue 8” and “The Deputy.”

He later parlayed into film with his first credited role in 1962’s “War Hunt.” Other popular movies that Redford starred in included, “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” “The Sting,” “The Way We Were,” “Out of Africa,” “Indecent Proposal,” “Up Close & Personal, “The Horse Whisperer,” “Spy Game,” “Lions for Lambs,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” and recently in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.”

He was nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Actor for “The Sting” in 1973, as well as Best Picture and Best Director for “Quiz Show.” He won the Oscar in 1980 for Best Director for the film “Ordinary People” which starred Donald Sutherland and Mary Tyler Moore. He also directed the films, “A River Runs Through It,” “The Legend of Bagger Vance,” “The Conspirator” and “The Company You Keep.”

Redford received the Golden Lion award at the 2017 Venice Film Festival for Lifetime Achievement. He was awarded the National Medal of Arts from President Bill Clinton in 1996. Utilizing his funds from his acting roles, Redford purchased a ski region on the east side of Mount Timpanogos northeast of Provo, Utah known as ‘Timp Haven.’ He later renamed it “Sundance” and it ultimately became the Sundance Film Festival which was the largest festival for independent films.

He was married to Lola Van Wagenen in 1958, where they shared four children. He is the grandfather to seven grandchildren. He later married Sibylle Szaggars in 2009.

Redford’s co-star, Jane Fonda who starred with the actor in “The Chase,” “Barefoot in the Park,” “The Electric Horseman” and “Our Souls at Night” posted the following message on social media in response to learning about his death:

“He meant a lot to me and was a beautiful person in every way. He stood for an America we have to keep fighting for.”
