DEERFIELD BEACH, FL—Rapper XXXTentacion, whose real name is Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy, 20, was shot and killed on Monday, June 18 in Deerfield Beach, Florida. Onfroy arrived at the hospital as a level 1 trauma patient, with little chance of survival. The rapper was pronounced dead shortly after he arrived at the hospital. He was leaving RIVA Motorsports shortly after 4 p.m. when he was approached by two armed suspects.
TMZ first broke the news of XXXTentacion being shot by two armed robbers as he was shopping for motorcycles. Witnesses reported that a Louie Vuitton bag was stolen from his vehicle.
The suspects have been described by officials from the Broward County Sheriff’s Department as, two African-American males who were dressed in hoodies. They were seen leaving the scene of the crime in a black Dodge Journey. TMZ reported that the the shooter’s face was covered with a red mask.
Footage surfaced earlier on Monday of the rapper unconscious in his vehicle. Civilians stood by recording the wounded rapper before he was taken to the hospital.
XXXTentacion was a musician whose music was categorized as lo-fi. He released his first studio album, 17 in 2017 and his second studio album ? earlier this Spring. ? peaked at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200. His last performance was at the Rolling Loud Festival in Miami.
Onfroy is one of many young rappers who built much of their following on Soundcloud. He faced several domestic abuse charges in recent years and spent a majority of the past year on house arrest.
Despite his past charges, Onfroy had expressed a desire to better himself and help others. He was planning on hosting a charity event this upcoming weekend in Florida.
Rappers J. Cole, Kanye West, and Big Sean tweeted out condolences for the slain Onfroy. He was born and raised in Plantation, Florida.
