SEATTLE, WA– Finally. The NFL finally returned in a Super Bowl LX rematch, as the Seattle Seahawks stormed back to defeat the New England Patriots 13-10 on Wednesday night, September 9 in the NFL’s 2026 season opener.
The Seattle Seahawks raised a Super Bowl victory banner commemorating a championship at Lumen field. Unfortunately, Seahawks Quarterback Sam Darnold injured his hip on the opening drive of the game, and did not return.
In his place, backup Drew Lock threw for 187 yards and one touchdown, while Jaxon Smith-Njigba had eight receptions for 122 yards. Seattle ended the night scoring 13 unanswered points in the rally victory.
New England Quarterback Drake Maye cost the Pats a victory with his three interceptions. The game seemed destined for overtime as the Patriots drove down the field and set up at the Seahawks’ 16-yard line with 26 seconds left in the game.
However, the New England Quarterback threw an ill advised pass into the end zone. Josh Jobe saved the opening night game with a toe-tapping pick in the waning moments of the game.
Had Maye not thrown this pass, the game likely would have gone into overtime at 13-13 with them already in field goal range. New England also suffered a terrible injury similar to the Seahawks.
New England Patriots Wide Receiver A.J. Brown suffered an apparent injury in his team debut against the Seattle Seahawks.
The Patriots’ marquee offseason acquisition was injured after trying to make a catch in the second half of New England’s Week 1 game. Brown was rolled up by the Seattle defender as he went to the ground and remained down on the field after the play.
Making his return was Wide Receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who exploded in the fourth quarter for a 45-yard game-tying, fourth-down touchdown catch and run. Smith-Njigba finished the game with 8 catches for 122 yards and the critical touchdown.
The Smith-Njigba touchdown came immediately after Maye’s first interception. Early in the fourth quarter, in Seattle territory, Maye threw a jump ball that Nehemiah Pritchett picked off on a deflection for his first career interception.
In his NFL debut, Jadarian Price posted 52 yards on 10 carries and caught both of his targets. He displayed impressive burst and patience, finding cutback lanes on a few wide runs that initially looked like they would be strung out for short gains.
It was a defensive slug fest. There were zero points scored in the first half.
It was a slow start, but the game picked up steam in the second half for opening night of the 2026 NFL season.
Tonight, the San Francisco 49ers will play the Los Angeles ar Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne, Australia. The Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers game will broadcast live on Netflix instead of a traditional television network or regular streaming home.
Kickoff is slated for 5:35 PM.
