HOLLYWOOD—We knew the receipts at the box-office would be big for the latest installment in the “Star Wars” franchise, but the question on everyone’s mind was just how big the movie would debut. Would it break the record held by “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” to hold the title of the largest opening at the box-office ever? The answer to that question is no, but it did indeed make history by becoming the second largest opening at the box-office ever bringing in over $220 million during its opening weekend.
“The Last Jedi” earned $45 million from Thursday showings, and took in over $104 million on Friday. On a global scale, the flick has amounted over $450 million since its debut. That is major business in the cinematic universe people, major. So expect the flick to reign supreme in theaters for the next 3-4 weeks easily if not longer. I mean there aren’t many high-caliber films slated for release in the coming weeks. Nabbing second place was the animated flick “Ferdinand” with $13.3 million. Dropping to third place was the previous box-office titan “Coco” which added another $10 million to its tally to bring its domestic total to over $150 million.
Nabbing fourth place was the drama “Wonder” with $5.4 million, and has since amounted over $109 million since its debut in November. Rounding out the top five was the comic book adventure “Justice League” with $4.1 million. The superhero extravaganza has since earned $219 million at the domestic box-office. This weekend sees the release of the reboot of “Jumanji” and “Pitch Perfect 3.” Both will draw audiences to the theater, but they will not be a match for the onslaught that “The Last Jedi” will be.
