TOPANGA CANYON—The Topanga Film Festival returns next month on Labor Day weekend from September 4 to September 6. The Topanga Film Festival features unique films that challenge convention and seek original ways to understand the world around us.

This year, the Topanga Film Festival will be celebrating its 20th anniversary at the Topanga Community Center located at 1440 North Topanga Canyon Boulevard, where the Main House will be transformed into a 200-seat movie theater. Sage’s Room will be transformed into a 40-seat micro theater to accommodate the event.

The official number of films shown has not been announced, films shown have been carefully curated through hundreds of submissions from all around the world. This year’s theme is “REFRAME– Cinema for Uncertain Times,” which intentionally leaves the films submitted open to interpretation of how they each incorporate the theme. However, the theme criteria do involve three major aspects, including creative optimism, a call to action, and the third being an artistic nod referencing a reframe of a shot to improve composition.

A few different categories are being showcased, including short films, feature narratives and documentaries, virtual and experimental media, and a young filmmakers showcase. All genres are welcome to be submitted.

Jury prizes will be awarded to the best films in several categories, and Outstanding Achievement will be awarded to Young Filmmakers in several categories.

There will be plenty of on-site parking, food trucks, vendors, and an outdoor bar and lounge. Tickets can be purchased at topangafilminstitute.org
