SHERMAN OAKS—Authorities are looking for two suspects connected to an armed robbery at a Macy’s, where an unknown amount of merchandise was stolen on Thursday, November 30.

According to reports, the incident transpired at 10:35 a.m. at the Macy’s inside the Westfield Fashion Square mall. Two Caucasian males, both wearing masks, entered the jewelry section of the store and used a hammer to smash through a glass display case of Gucci watches, stole an unknown amount of merchandise and fled the scene.

The Los Angeles Police Department first responded to calls indicating there had been a shooting. The first responders rushed to the location. Van Nuys Division Capt. Lillian Carranza indicated via Twitter: “NOT  an ACTIVE  Shooter Macy’s Westfield Fashion Square 14006 Riverside Dr. We are investigating an armed robbery. No known shots fired. No known injuries. Investigation in progress. @lapdVanNuysDiv  @911LAPD  @LAPDVanNuysCPAB. More to follow.”

Ground support arrived in about two minutes, and around 75 responders arrived on the scene. When they reached the scene they found that there had been no shots fired, but that at least one of the robbers had been armed with a gun. They deduced that it had been a smash-and-grab style robbery.

The robbers escaped the mall though the east exit using a white or silver SUV as a getaway vehicle. The vehicle had reportedly been waiting for them to arrive.  In a short interview with ABC 7, one man said “we heard a big bang noise and there’s a guy with a hammer, banging, I think, one of the watch counters. And then basically someone went towards him and he pulled out what looked like a gun.” There were no reports of any injuries during the incident.

During a press conference, Lt. Carranza indicated they were confident they would find the suspects involved. She assured the public that the suspects could be identified using license plate scanners spread throughout the city. She stated that there were “a lot of video cameras in the Van Nuys area in the mall, very high quality video” that authorities could purse through the find the robbers.

The LAPD is asking anyone with information about the incident to contact Van Nuys detectives at (818) 374-0040.
