UNITED STATES—By now you’re all aware of the debacle that has transpired with the government and its treatment of its veterans, some who’ve actually died as a result of waiting for care. Of course, President Obama and his handlers have jumped into action to do their best to alleviate the problem. But let me ask you the question, is it too late?

Not really, but this scandal as many have pegged it, raises an even larger discussion. Shouldn’t veterans be at the top of our priority list? This is an issue that has consistently boggled my mind. Our veterans should be a number 1 priority for the U.S. government. They are performing a courageous task that not many Americans can even fathom performing. It’s because of them; we get the opportunity to enjoy so many of the freedoms that we have.

If anything, they should be at the top of the list when it comes to medical care. To hear that some veterans had to wait to obtain medicine they need to live is baffling. They shouldn’t be waiting to get chemotherapy or treatment for cancer they might be fighting. I mean, really?!

I just can’t understand how these hiccups continue to exist in our government. It’s almost as if we care about our veterans, but not enough to make it clear to them, that they matter. Yeah, we have a load of holidays that are aimed to pay tribute to vets, but how many Americans actually celebrate vets on those holidays? Precisely my point!

I could care less about what ‘issues’ lie in the system, but as an American who has had multiple family members serve in major wars, vets are the reason I have the freedoms and liberties that I enjoy. Its not just on the medical scale that concerns me, it’s in the employment world as well. Heck, a vet shouldn’t even have to worry about working after serving the country, but so many of them are placed in dire straits where they have no choice.

If anything, they should have a monetary compensation to take care of them the rest of their life. If I have to hear one more story about a veteran who has no place to live, is fighting to stay off of the streets because our government is refusing to take steps to eliminate such problems, I’m going to explode.

How about we introduce some legislation that actively fights against such atrocities from taking place? How about members of Congress and the Senate who fight so much amongst themselves, take a closer look at the big picture? See what is transpiring in front of your eyes and take action to do something about it.

This crisis has only done brought to light, what so many Americans are already well aware of: our government has major holes in it. Its time to fix those holes ASAP. When it comes to veterans they should be at the top of the list. Why? For me to explain that answer again would be a travesty. They put their lives on the line to secure our security; the least we can do is ensure they have all the basic needs and so much more to live a healthy and sustaining life.
