HOLLYWOOD—Laughter was on everyone’s mind this weekend as it was a battle of the sequels, and coming out on top was the comedy “ 22 Jump Street” with a $60 million haul. That nearly doubled the gross of its predecessor from 2012.

The movie starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill far exceeded the expectations that many movie enthusiasts predicted.  Not far behind was the sequel “How to Train Your Dragon 2” with a $50 million gross; outperforming the numbers of its predecessor from 2010.

Landing in the #3 spot was the Angelina Jolie fantasy flick “Maleficent” with another $19 million to its tally. After three weeks, the movie has surpassed the $150 million mark at the domestic box-office. In the #4 spot was the Tom Cruise thriller “Edge of Tomorrow” with $16 million. Strong word of mouth buzz is keeping audiences intrigued.

Rounding out the top 5 was last week’s box-office champ, “The Fault in Our Stars” with $15.7 million. Last week’s winner dropped close to 70 percent in its second weekend at the box-office, but has already grossed over $80 million in just two weeks.

Next week is a battle between a comedy and a stage adaptation as the sequel “Think Like a Man Too” and “Jersey Boys” go toe-to-toe at the box-office.
