PHILADELPHIA, PA– In a hostile, tough environment, the San Francisco 49ers dug deep and advanced to the divisional round of the NFL playoffs with a 23-19 victory over the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. The Forty Niners showed true grit, after their emotional leader , tight end George Kittle was taken off the field with a torn Achilles tendon on Sunday, January 11.
Brock Purdy threw a go-ahead 4-yard touchdown pass to Christian McCaffrey late in the fourth quarter, San Francisco used a trick play on a TD toss from Jennings to McCaffrey, and the 49ers eliminated the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles with a stunning wild-card victory Sunday.
The 49ers now head to Seatle for the right to play in the NFC Championship Game. After Kittle went down early, the team needed a big effort from all players. One of those players was Demarcus Robinson. The wide receiver set the tone early with a touchdown grab and a 61 yard reception on the 49ers first drive, grabbing an early 7-0 lead.
The Eagles however would not go quietly into the night. Saquan Barkley had over 100 yards in this seesaw battle.
Philadelphia was again doomed by a lethargic offensive effort under embattled offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo that cost it a shot at a repeat championship.
Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts threw for only 168 yards and a touchdown and the Eagles failed to build off a 13-10 halftime lead by totaling only 36 total yards in the third quarter on 16 plays.
It was just two weeks ago that the Seahawks and 49ers played for the #1 seed , with Seatle winning the contest by a score of 13-3. Needless to say defense was dominant in the contest, which was much closer than the score would indicate.
Well here we go. Saturday Night. Winner advances- loser goes home.
