NEW YORK, NY– Game 4 of the NBA Finals was a spectacular showdown between the San Antonio Spurs and the New York Knicks, the fans at Madison Square Garden were filled with unadulterated joy as the Knicks overcame a 29-point deficit to defeat the San Antonio Spurs, 107-106 on June 10.
Their team had just completed the largest comeback in NBA Finals history, the miraculous victory puts the Knicks up 3-1, one victory away from their first NBA title in 53 years.
The Hand of OG- Anunoby came flying through the lane as a Jalen Brunson three-point attempt was short, and completed a tip-in to put the Knicks up in the final seconds of that contest, which eventually pushed them to a 107-106 win.
It was unquestionably one of the greatest moments of sports in the 21st century. Shocking, baffling, ridiculous and finally, unbelievable.
“That has to be the most iconic shot in the history of New York basketball,” Knicks coach Mike Brown said.
San Antonio was excellent opening the game, looking to even the Finals at two games apiece. Thoroughly dominating the Knickerbockers, holding a comfortable 76-49 lead at halftime.
Knocking down a whopping, and NBA Finals record 14 3-pointers in the first half, the Spurs were in cruise control.
If it were a little league baseball game, the mercy rule may have come into effect. Instead, San Antonio made several crucial mistakes in the 4th quarter. One of the worst choke jobs in sports history.
Plenty of celebrities were sitting courtside on Wednesday to watch the Knicks’ comeback. The regular faces were all there, including Spike Lee, Ben Stiller, Larry David and Timothée Chalamet, who was so excited on the court after the game.
But Brunson helped bring the Knicks back with 36 points and Anunoby finished with 33.
No team had come from more than 24 points down in a finals game, when Boston did it against the Lakers in 2008, since the NBA began keeping detailed play-by-play for all four quarters in 1997. The Spurs led 81-52 in the third quarter.
How did this happen?
First off, the Spurs went ice cold from beyond The arc in the second half. At one point, San Antonio attempted, and missed eight three pointers in a row.
Another problem was Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama, who elected to take outside jump shots, rather than post up. He had 24 points and 13 rebounds but shot just 9 for 25 from the field, but missed two key free throws in the final minute.
The Knicks gave themselves a chance by limiting the Spurs to 14 points on 4-for-20 shooting in the third quarter, using a 13-0 run to get back in it and cutting it to 90-75 heading to the fourth.
These Knicks are superb at comebacks. Erasing a 22-point deficit in the fourth quarter against Cleveland in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals, just don’t quit.
OG Anunoby’s tip-in with 1.2 seconds remaining was spectacular. The Knicks have an opportunity to clinch their first NBA Title since 1973, Game 5 is on Saturday night in San Antonio.
I Love this game!
