BRENTWOOD—On August 12, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced that Nick Reiner, the son of director Rob Reiner, 78, was indicted for the murder of his father and his mother, Michele Singer Reiner, 70. The unsealed grand jury results were filed on July 20.
The defendant is accused of killing his parents on December 14, 2025, inside their residence in the 200 block of South Chadbourne Avenue in Brentwood.
He faces two counts of first-degree murder, which are violations of Section 187(a) of the California Penal Code. Attached to these charges is a special circumstance allegation that the defendant lay in wait before he committed the crime, which is a violation of Section 190.2(a)(15), along with a special circumstance allegation for committing multiple murders. The indictment also includes a special allegation for the use of a deadly weapon, a knife.
After fleeing the crime scene, Reiner was arrested in Exposition Park on December 14 by the Los Angeles Police Department. He is being held without bail. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for September 15, 2026, and will occur in Department 108 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center.
If convicted, Nick Reiner faces a possible sentence of either life without parole in a California State prison or the death sentence. The District Attorney’s Office has not yet determined whether it will seek the death penalty in this case.
The investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by the LAPD’s Robbery Homicide Division, while the Major Crimes Division is conducting the prosecution.
Reiner is represented in this case by Los Angeles Deputy Public Defender Kimberly Greene, who entered a not guilty plea on his behalf. His original attorney, Alan Jackson, stepped down in January 2026 for confidential reasons.
Robert Reiner is best known for his role as Michael Stivic in the Norman Lear sitcom “All in the Family” and its sequel series “Archie Bunker’s Place.” Reiner won two Emmy Awards. He directed the following films: “This Is Spinal Tap” and its sequel, “A Few Good Men”, “The Princess Bride,” and “When Harry Met Sally”. He also directed “Being Charlie,” which he co-wrote with Matt Elisofon, and which was inspired by Nick Reiner’s struggles with drug addiction and homelessness.
Michele Singer Reiner was a photographer, and a producer who, along with her husband, produced the documentary “Albert Brooks: Defending My Life,” and the films “Shock and Awe” and “Spinal Tap 2: The End Continues.” Rob and his wife were co-presidents of the production company Castle Rock Entertainment.
