HOLLYWOOD—For the third consecutive week, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” maintained the top spot at the box-office over the Easter holiday weekend. The Marvel movie took in an additional $26.6 million, helping the film cross over the $200 million mark domestically. At this rate, I think Steve Rogers and company will hold its grip on the box-office until “The Amazing Spiderman 2” arrives on May 2.
Taking the #2 spot at the multiplex was the animated flick “ Rio 2” with a little over $22 million. After just two weeks the sequel has already earned more than $75 million domestically. Not bad, not bad at all. Coming in the #3 spot is the religious flick “Heaven is For Real” with a healthy $21.5 million. It’s never a bad idea to open a religious film around Easter weekend. Just ask Mel Gibson whose “The Passion of the Christ” shattered box-office numbers in 2004.
Actor Johnny Depp continues to have trouble at the box-office as his $100 million plus sci-fi thriller, “Transcendence” failed to intrigue moviegoers with a dismal $11.2 million debut. At this point, it’s safe to say this movie has also bombed just like “The Lone Ranger.” Rounding out the top five is the sequel, “A Haunted House 2” which laughed up $9.1 million in its debut weekend.
This week audiences will have plenty to choose from with the comedy “The Other Woman,” the thriller “The Quiet Ones” and the action-thriller “Brick Mansions” starring the late Paul Walker. All have the potential to de-throne “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” but I have a feeling the Captain will maintain his hold on the box-office.
