SANTA MONICA—The awards show that is mostly voted on by fans was held over the weekend. No, I’m not talking about the Oscars, not the Grammys, not the Tony Awards; I’m referring to the 2019 MTV Movie & TV Awards. The ceremony was hosted by “Shazam!” star Zachary Levi and I must say the guy was hilarious.

He had a fantastic opening monologue calling out all the celebrities in the audience, not to mention poking fun at himself and highlighting the importance of embracing your quirks no matter what. I mean even Sandra Bullock, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Ray J and a few others were part of the first 10-15 minutes of jokes.

The big winner of the night was “Avengers: Endgame” which walked away with the Best Movie prize, as well as the prize for Best Villain to Josh Brolin for his role as Thanos. Other big winners of the night included Noah Centineo who picked up TWO golden popcorns for Best Kiss with Lana Condor for “To All the Boys I Ever Loved Before” and for Breakthrough Performance. Other winners of the night included Sandra Bullock winning for Most Frightened Performance for “Bird Box.” Hmm, there wasn’t anything too scary about that movie people.

Dwayne Johnson gave an elongated speech as he accepted the Generation Award, but I loved that he noted NOT conforming to Hollywood standards, but forcing Hollywood to conform to him. Remember that people, you don’t have to change to be successful. Jada Pinkett Smith was honored with the Trailblazer Award, but the ceremony didn’t really highlight her illustrious career, because she had a big one people.

Really? Nick Cannon winning Best Host over Rupaul, yeah, I know where this ceremony is going. If you’re in the audience you’re collecting the big prize. While music is never the highlight of the ceremony, Lizzo delivered an epic musical set for her hit single “Juice” that was plenty of fun. I loved seeing that trailer for “The Kitchen” starring Elisabeth Moss, Tiffany Haddish and Melissa McCarthy. I seriously thought this movie was going to be a comedy, but this looks like a hardcore drama; I’m intrigued people.

There were indeed some hilarious moments during the show like Nick Kroll and Trixie Mattel having a shade off as they presented the prize for Reality Royalty to the hit series “Love and Hip-Hop Atlanta.” The other hilarious moment of the ceremony was Levi’s parody of Jordan Peele’s thriller “Us.” I mean I was falling off my couch laughing at the antics. It was genius. Other winners of the night including “Captain Marvel” winning for Best Fight, Elisabeth Moss winning for Best Performance in a Show for “The Handmaid’s Tale” and Daniel Levy winning for Best Comedic Performance for “Schitt’s Creek.”

So now that MTV has crowned its winners for movies and TV, we are all eagerly awaiting to see who will be nominated for the one ceremony where anything and iconic moments have transpired, the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards!
