HOLLYWOOD—Have you ever seen the movie “Cape Fear?” Yes, I actually have the 1991 version starring Jessica Lange, Nick Nolte and Robert De Niro. Now, I’ve never watched the original 1962 film starring Gregory Peck, but in 2026 we have a new version that is not a movie, but a mini-movie TV series on Apple TV+.

The latest entry into “Cape Fear” stars Javier Bardem, Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson. Adams and Wilson portray married couple Anna and Tom Bowden. Adams was the attorney who was responsible for her client Max Cady (Bardem) spending 17 years in prison for murdering his pregnant ex-wife that apparently, he didn’t.

Cady is out and to say he is a bit off his rocker would be an understatement. He is emotionally stunted, he is beyond unhinged and so calculated it is scary, but exciting to witness. Bardem brings an extra touch of looniness to this character that is uncomfortable to watch, yet fascinating at the same time. He finds a way to immerse himself into Anna and Tom’s lives, and to say this family is dealing with some issues would be an understatement.

Anna is riddled with guilt knowing her tryst with Tom during Max’s trial didn’t present her in the best light. Not to mention she was pregnant with her daughter Natalie (Lily Collias), and she convinced Max to take a deal that was not in his best interest. Yes, Natalie is Tom’s stepdaughter, which opens another can of worms when it comes to her brother Zack (Joe Anders), who self-inflicts pain, and is quite troubled. Zack is the black sheep of the family and his recent incident in school where he shared a disturbing video of a girl has made him a pariah.

Tom and Anna are overly protective of Zack, so much to the point that Natalie feels ignored. We are seeing their kids spiral in front of them as a direct result of them not seeing what is starring right in front of them. Making the situation more complicated is Max Cady has been released from jail and has inserted himself into Anna and Tom’s lives; they are nervous and rightfully so. They did a bad thing and now it is coming back to haunt them.

Anna’s job is that of a defense attorney for a nonprofit known for freeing individuals wrongfully convicted. The company is placed in the spotlight when it comes to Max. Her boss is just giddy at the notion of having Max as the face of the company, not realizing Anna’s actual role in his conviction. The first episode hooked me, the second episode locked me in, and after the third episode, I’m just waiting patiently each week for the new episode to drop to see how things unfold, even though I’ve already watched the movie.

Is Max causing this mayhem or are there other sinister players involved? Zack’s missing toe was a moment, not to mention Natalie’s yoga exercise being televised to the entire school and her drowning her angst with someone that Zack has been getting drugs from is not a good sign. The good girl is about to spiral and how mommy and daddy react is going to be intriguing to witness.

Then there is the Tom of it all who is apparently cheating on Anna with a colleague. I mean Tom you are so ballsy to share a kiss with another woman in your home, and your teenage son is right there to hear all your conversations and witness what is unfolding! Am I just crazy or are people just stupid?

Let’s get back to the Max of it all, because we haven’t even scratched the surface of his crazy. Is he behind the text messages to Zack, did he use that drone to record Natalie exercising, did he murder those skunks, did he kill Anna’s client, did he cut off Zack’s toe? No concrete evidence has been presented for any of the incidents, but the finger is being pointed in multiple directions to keep the viewer guessing. This new adaptation courtesy of two of the biggest directors in Hollywood, Martin Scorsese (he directed the 1991 remake) and Steven Spielberg, so of course who wouldn’t want to invest their time into this thriller.

I am watching each episode of “Cape Fear” like I’ve never seen the movie before. That is the testament of some fascinating acting from Bardem, Adams and Wilson. All incredible actors in their own right. It’s a tense-thrill ride with a ton of shocks and turns that is must-see TV. New episodes drop every Friday on Apple TV+.
