MALIBU-The city of Malibu is holding a El Nino Preparedness Community Workshop on Tuesday, September 29 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Malibu City Hall Council Chambers located at 23825 Stuart Ranch Road. The workshop is part of the city’s efforts to prepare for El Niño conditions since early summer.
The workshop will bring together representatives from the City’s Community Development, Public Works and Public Safety Departments, and Caltrans, to help homeowners and building professionals understand the potential impacts of strong El Niño conditions and prepare for the months ahead. Topics will include storm preparedness, flooding and debris flow risks, coastal erosion, infrastructure conditions, and ongoing work along PCH and throughout the community.
Malibu is preparing now because the city faces unique risks from winter storms, including coastal erosion, flooding, mudslides and debris flows, particularly in areas affected by the Palisades Fire. This first community workshop will give residents an opportunity to get information and ask questions about current conditions, what is being done to prepare, and what property owners can do now to protect their homes and families.
For the Southern California coast, the National Weather Service forecasts an increased chance of an active winter storm pattern, with the potential for periods of heavy rain, high surf, coastal erosion and flooding, while emphasizing that individual storm timing and intensity cannot yet be predicted.
