BEVERLY HILLS—Beverly Hills City Councilmember William W. Brien, M.D. announced that he is resigning from the office on or about May 2, 2016.

According to a press release from the city of Beverly Hills, Dr. Brien accepted a post in Houston at CHI St. Luke’s Health–Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center as its vice president of medical operations and chief clinical officer.

The filling of City Council vacancies between elections are governed by state election code, which requires that the City Council, within 60 days from the vacancy, either appoint a replacement or call a special election. At the earliest the council can take up the matter at the May 3 City Council meeting.

If the BH City Council decides to call a special election, it would be held on the next regularly established election date not less than 114 days from the call of the special election, which would take place on November 8, 2016. Whether elected or appointed, the new councilmember would hold office until March 2017, which is when Brien’s term expires.
