SHERMAN OAKS—A deer was struck and killed after wandering onto the 405 Freeway in Sherman Oaks on Thursday, August 20. The animal was hit by a driver in a Honda sedan traveling southbound.
The crash happened around 1:50 a.m., just south of Getty Center Drive. When officers arrived on scene, they shut down traffic near Skirball Drive and moved the deer onto the right shoulder.
Video from the scene shows officers pulling the deer by its antlers to the side of the freeway and covering it with a yellow tarp while cars waited nearby.
The roadway was cleared and reopened by 2:16 a.m., about 25 minutes after the crash.
This stretch of the 405 near the Sepulveda Pass is a known wildlife corridor with a history of animal strikes. A mountain lion was struck and killed in the same area earlier this year. Deer and vehicle collisions typically peak between October and December, with the most dangerous times being right before and after sunrise and sunset.
