SANTA MONICA—A DUI and Driver’s License Checkpoint managed by the Santa Monica Police Department’s Traffic Unit will take place on Friday, January 30 between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. The exact location of the checkpoints have not been revealed, but they are to take place within city limits.

Officers will be looking for any signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment to ensure that motorists are in possession of a valid driver’s license.

DUI checkpoints have proved to improve safety on the roads by reducing the number of individuals that are killed or injured by drug or alcohol related collisions. In 2012, drunk driving was titled the cause of death for 802 individuals in the state of California. More than 90 percent of all California drivers approve of DUI checkpoints.

Funding for the checkpoint is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Santa Monica Police Department would also like to remind everyone to call 9-1-1 to report the appearance of drunk drivers on the road.
