Kern County, CA – On the afternoon of Friday, June 19, 2026, a single-vehicle collision resulted in the death of a man and sparked a hillside fire that burned hundreds of acres, according to KBAK, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 4:30 PM on westbound Highway 58 east of General Beale Road.
Authorities said the man was driving a 2013 Hyundai Azera westbound at a speed well in excess of the posted limit when, for reasons still under investigation, he lost control and crashed into a drainage ditch on the right shoulder.
The vehicle continued out of control, went off the roadway and down the mountainside, and overturned, ejecting the driver. The man sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The vehicle and the surrounding hillside caught fire, with flames reaching approximately 20 feet high. Several acres were burning at the time of the initial response, with fire spreading along the roadway toward the northbound shoulder.
Westbound traffic on Highway 58 was stopped approximately 1,000 feet east of the collision, with a traffic break initiated at the top of the hill. Caltrans implemented extended closures on westbound State Route 58 and State Route 223, with the northbound lanes at State Route 223 also shut down to facilitate firefighting operations.
A four-wheel-drive tow truck with approximately 50 feet of cable was requested to access the vehicle via General Beale Road and a fire road. The roadway was fully reopened at approximately 9:12 PM.
CAL FIRE identified the resulting blaze as the Star Fire. The fire burned 577 acres before being fully contained as of June 22. Anyone with information is asked to contact CHP Bakersfield. The investigation remains ongoing.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s comparative negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages through a wrongful death claim.
