LOS ANGELES—On Monday, October 30, the Los Angeles Police Department’s South Traffic Division sought help from the public in identifying a suspect involved in a hit and run that left another man dead. On Wednesday, November 1, Shauntrell Darnell Mathews, 41, of Los Angeles was arrested.

The incident occurred on October 27, just after 6:00 p.m. named Herman Charles Avery Jr., 76, of Inglewood was crossing the street on Western Avenue, when Mathews’ vehicle struck him. Paramedics from the LAFD provided aide to the victim who later died on the scene. Police officials disclosed that Mathews had a young boy (between the ages of 7-9) in his vehicle, which he abandoned at Western Avenue and 82nd Street.

Just before 11:00 a.m. on November 1, Mathews arrived at the LAPD’s 77th Station and turned himself into police.
