LOS ANGELES—Going to a movie theater can be a fun and exciting way to enjoy yourself. I personally love movies and try to go to the cinema as often as possible to see the newest flick. I typically go to a theater about once a week or every other week, and it can get quite expensive. Luckily, there are ways to enjoy watching a movie at a theater without having to spend a whole lot of money.

The first thing that I would recommend, is taking advantage of the discounts that many theaters offer such as child, student and senior discounts. Meaning that if you’re a young teen or young adult and you are currently in school, take advantage of the discounts that most theaters offer students. You could end up saving a lot of money especially over time. Keep in mind that they may want you to show proof of your enrollment with a school ID.

The second and probably most beneficial suggestion that I would make, is to go to a discount movie theater. In Los Angeles County, there are several movie theaters that offer lower ticket prices. Some theaters have certain days that tickets are discounted like the Rave Cinema in Baldwin Hills. This cinema offers tickets for $6 on Wednesdays. Other movie theaters may show semi-new films and offer very low ticket prices. The Regency Theater Norwalk 8 in Norwalk offers $2 tickets for all films before 6 p.m. and $3 tickets after 6 p.m. There is, however, a $2 surcharge for 3D movies.

Lastly, buying snacks at the concessions stand in a movie theater can put a big dent in your wallet. So, while I won’t condone sneaking in your own snacks, I will suggest eating before going to a theater. Snack food prices are typically hiked up drastically. A way to overcome this obstacle can be to either eat at home or eat at a fast food restaurant beforehand. This way, you won’t be as hungry while watching your movie and if you do feel like buying a snack, you can opt for a smaller purchase.
