SOUTH CAROLINA—Former Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden, won the South Carolina Democratic primary on Saturday, February 29, marking this his first victory of the 2020 presidential race.

Biden was able to gain a boost in his presidential campaign that has been struggling against other candidates. Bernie Sanders currently holds the top spot for delegates in the race to win the Democratic nomination. Biden was able to gain support from African-American supporters ahead of Super Tuesday.

A total of 54 pledged delegates were at stake Saturday. With 87 percent of returns in, Biden had a 48.8 percent lead over Sanders who earned 19.8 percent and Tom Steyer came in third place with 11.5 percent. In a statement posted to his Twitter account, Biden thanked South Carolina:

“Thank you, South Carolina! To all those who have been knocked down, counted out, and left behind – this is your campaign. Together, we will win this nomination and beat Donald Trump.”

Super Tuesday will be held on March 3, where a total of 14 states will head to the polls.
