WEST HOLLYWOOD—Juneteenth was celebrated on Friday, June 19, the celebrations begin, in West Hollywood and its Social Justice Advisory Board will host a free Juneteenth celebration Saturday, June 20, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at West Hollywood Park.

The celebration will have vendor booths, live entertainment with a speaker stage, and food trucks, the city of West Hollywood noted on its website. The event will be family-friendly and will honor and celebrate Black and BIPOC owned businesses, organizations, and nonprofits.

While the celebration is free, West Hollywood is asking attendees to RSVP on the Eventbrite website, as Eventbrite already shows a confirmed log of 1,000 total attendees.

Juneteenth is a national holiday observed annually on June 19, set to remember the historic day when remaining slaves in Galveston, Texas learned they were free close to 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln.

According to the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Juneteenth is recognized as the United States second Independence Day and is celebrated primarily within the African American community.
