MALIBU—A man was charged on Friday, February 21 for sexually assaulting a woman who was sleeping in her Malibu home.

Matthew Caleb Fairchild, 34, was charged with entering the victim’s apartment and sexually assaulting her, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

On February 8 at around 3:45 a.m., Fairchild entered the 20-year-old victim’s residence at an apartment complex near Civic Center Way and Stuart Ranch Road. It is believed that Fairchild climbed the stairs to the victim’s bedroom. He is then alleged to have sexually assaulted the victim as she slept in her bed.

Fairchild, a transient, faces one felony count each of assault with intent to commit a felony during the commission of a first-degree burglary and first-degree residential burglary with person present. His case also includes allegations that he was convicted of assault likely to produce great bodily injury in 2018 and receiving stolen property last year as well. The defendant faces a possible maximum sentence of life in state prison if convicted as charged. His bail was set at $1 million.

Arraignment for Fairchild was also scheduled for February 21 in the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Van Nuys Branch. The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
