MALIBU—On Monday, January 19, a mule was struck and killed while crossing Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu.
At approximately 7 a.m., the animal, initially identified as a horse, was struck as it crossed Southbound PCH at Heathercliff Road.
The driver of the vehicle was not injured in the crash, but the highway was temporarily closed as animal control agents attended to the mule.
Named “Red,” the mule had escaped from its nearby enclosure during a construction project along with a horse that was returned home safely.
Red was not killed upon impact, but suffered critical injuries while lying still on the highway that resulted in its death As a result of the severity of the Red’s injuries, the mule was euthanized by an animal mortician in an effort to relieve his suffering.
