SANTA MONICA—On January 26, the Santa Monica City Council voted unanimously to discontinue the $25 non-resident library card fee to go into effect on Monday, February 1.

According to a press release from the city of Santa Monica, before Tuesday’s council vote, on December 10, 2015, the Santa Monica Public Library Board passed a motion to get rid of the non-resident library card fee and sustain the Santa Monica Public Library‘s budget at current levels.

Removal of the fee became evident from patron suggestions and at the most recent Library strategic planning process. Local organizations including the Santa Monica Public Library Board, the Innovation Technology Task Force and the Friends of the Santa Monica Public Library Board all advocated for dropping the fee.
