SANTA CLARITA—A small plane crashed near the northbound 14 Freeway in Santa Clarita on Saturday, January 4, leaving the only passenger onboard dead.

The small plane crashed by the Newhall Avenue exit and erupted in flames. No fire spread to surrounding brush, but the sole passenger was pronounced dead on arrival, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The crash was reported about 10:12 a.m. Authorities have not identified the pilot and it is unclear where the plane was headed. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the crash.
