MALIBU —A man who tried to rape a female victim was caught and identified about one month after his attempt.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Christian Marcus Verdin was arrested on Friday, April 2, for attempting to sexually assault the unidentified victim on March 12.

“After exhaustive efforts, Lost Hills Station Detectives located Verdin in an area within the city of San Bernardino. He was taken into custody without incident and will be transported back to the Lost Hills Station for booking,” said the LASD press release.

Verdin was identified after technicians from the Los Angeles County Crime Lab obtained DNA samples from evidence recovered on the day of the assault. Additional information disclosed, “A thorough background check of the suspect’s criminal history through various department investigative resources revealed his prior addresses, and he frequented in the city of San Bernardino.” The suspect was on parole for a burglary in 2008.

Verdin attempted to sexually assault the victim after her morning jog at Point Dume State Park in Malibu. When grabbed from behind, she struggled for several minutes before escaping the attack.

The victim ran down the hillside, jumped and slid down the cliff. Though Verdin didn’t follow her, he fled the scene with her 2004 Toyota Land Cruiser. She suffered minor injuries and was transported to the hospital. As of press time the stolen vehicle has not been recovered.
