CALIFORNIA-This year, GLAD (Greater Los Angeles Agency on Deafness) center began work with UCLA, Gallaudet University, and the University of San Francisco in order to begin work for the “Deaf Genetics Project.”
According to the project’s Facebook page, “The Cancer Genetics Education for the Deaf Genetics Project team has developed health information in ASL about the importance of knowing your family’s health history.” The research team is now looking for individuals 18 years and older who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, are ASL users, and can access a computer and Internet to participate in this study. Participants will be given a $40 gift card for their participation.
This is an ongoing project and has been split into three phases. Phase one although completed, hopes to spread the word of the project using bilingual approaches and will inform anyone interested on the projects main topics.
Phase two (currently in progress) will be used to recruit eligible candidates in order to evaluate their genetics. The final phase will conclude with researchers disseminating the information gathered.
