WESTWOOD—On Wednesday, October 7, Steve-O, 41, of “Jackass” was sentenced to 30 days in a Los Angeles County jail for climbing to the top of a 100 foot crane as part of a publicity stunt to spread awareness about SeaWorld and its alleged poor treatment of sea mammals.

The stunt, which took place on 6094 W. Selma Avenue on August 9, consisted of Steve-O dropping an inflatable Shamu toy with “SeaWorld Sucks” written on it and lighting off a firework.

Both police and firefighters assumed Steve-O was planning to jump off the crane, so they brought air cushions to help protect him. After he climbed down the crane he was taken into custody.

Steve-O, whose real name is Stephen Gilchrist Glover, was charged with one count each of creating a false emergency, use of unregistered fireworks, storing fireworks without a permit, possession of fireworks without a permit and trespassing. He is scheduled to begin serving his jail time on December 9.

On Wednesday, October 7, Steve-O made a public statement regarding his 30-day sentence via Instagram.

“I just got sentenced to 30 days in LA County jail, and this is what I have to say about it: ‘Considering I’ve become a clean and sober, dog-rescuing vegan, I must say I’m ready to go to jail—not just because it will bring so much attention to the plight of Orcas in captivity, but because it’s nice to know I haven’t lost my edge.'”

This is not the first time Steve-O has publicly scrutinized SeaWorld through a “Jackass-esque” prank. In December 2014, he vandalized a freeway exit sign to also read the message “SeaWorld Sucks,” which led to a traffic citation.
