LONDON—Two people were killed after a man stabbed them on London Bridge on Friday, November 29. The Metropolitan Police Department and City of London Police responded to a call of a stabbing at 1:58 p.m. near the London Bridge.

 

Video footage of the incident shows people running to evacuate the area, as bystanders attempted to subdue the suspect. The suspect was shot by authorities on the northbound carriageway on the western side, near Fishmongers’ Hall.

Met Police Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu issued the following statement about the incident:

“I can confirm that a number of other people received injuries at this incident, and as soon as we can provide further updates on their condition, we will. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to everybody that has been involved in this and is anxiously waiting for information on their loved ones.”

“As you would expect, due to the nature of this incident, we treated it as though it were terror-related. I am now in the position to confirm that this has been declared a terrorist incident. We are working with the City of London Police,” Basu added.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan publicly praised members of the police and public who confronted the suspect, who were called heroes after attempting to wrestle the knife from the suspect, who has been identified as Usman Khan, 28, who previously served a prison sentence for a terror-related crime.

The United Kingdom’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson issued a public statement regarding the early release the suspect from prison.

“It is very important that we enforce the appropriate sentences for dangerous criminals, especially for terrorists, that, I think the public will want to see,” said Johnson

Khan was reportedly released from prison in December 2018, “on license,” which is similar to parole in America. The two people killed during the stabbing, a man and a woman, as well as three others who were injured.
