SANTA MONICA—Around 2 p.m. on June 22, the Santa Monica Police Department announced it received a report of an individual experiencing a mental health crisis at Santa Monica Place and dispatched its Crisis Negotiation Team to the scene to attempt to de-escalate the situation.

Santa Monica Place is an outdoor mall on the Third Street Promenade at the southern end, two blocks from the Santa Monica Pier and Santa Monica Beach.

Officers were dispatched to the scene to support the negotiation team. Part of the area was closed off, including the northbound side of Second Street between Santa Monica Boulevard and Colorado Avenue.

The SMPD assured the public that there is no threat to Santa Monica and asked citizens to avoid the area while negotiators and firefighters complete their tasks.

No additional information has been released to the public, including the name of the individual involved in the mental health crisis, or the location within Santa Monica Place where the incident occurred. The SMPD will provide more information in the future.
