SANTA MONICA—On Friday, June 19, a group of teenage boys riding in a self-driving Waymo car were photographed hanging outside the vehicle. The incident occurred on Olympic Boulevard during rush hour.
According to an eyewitness, the teens were sitting on the open window ledges as the car drove through heavy traffic. They were seen taking selfies on a cellphone while nearby drivers looked on.
Onlookers pleaded with the teens to get back inside the vehicle for safety reasons. A witness informed ABC 7 Eyewitness News, that despite the repeated attempts, they did not listen. The teens varied in age between 10 and 15 years old.
The incident transpired about five months after federal regulators opened an investigation into Waymo when one of its cars struck a nine-year-old girl near a Santa Monica elementary school at low speed, resulting in minor injuries.
No additional details about the incident have been disclosed to the public.
