SHERMAN OAKS—Actor and comedian John Witherspoon, died at the age of 77 at his Sherman Oaks home on Tuesday, October 29.

The late actor was best known for his role as “Mr. Jones” in the 1995 film “Friday,” which was written by rapper and actor Ice Cube. Witherspoon was also known for his comedic chops making appearances on the TV shows, “The Wayans Bros” where he portrayed the father to actors Marlon and Shawn Wayans. He portrayed the character ’Pops’ on the 90s series.

Witherspoon was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1942. Aside from his stand-up comedy career, he was known as a fashion model in his hometown, and began acting in the late 70s. He also was a frequent guest on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” who was  the godfather to his son JD.  Witherspoon also appeared in the films “Boomerang,” “Soul Plane” and appeared on the Cartoon Network series “The Boondocks” where he voiced the character ‘Grandad.’

Witherspoon’s family tweeted the following on Tuesday:

“It is with deep sadness we have to tweet this, but our husband and father John Witherspoon has passed away. He was a legend in the entertainment industry, and a father figure to all who watched him over the years. We love you “POPS” always and forever.” –

Witherspoon died unexpectedly at his home from natural causes. He is survived by his wife Angela and his sons John David (JD) and Alexander.
