HOLLYWOOD—On February 19, Eric William Dane, best known for his role in Grey’s Anatomy playing Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan died at age 53. Dane publicly shared his diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in April 2025. He spent his last days with his loved ones.
Dane, who was born in San Francisco in 1972, realized his love for acting while still in high school. It wasn’t long before he be he started making guest appearances on popular shows like “Saved by the Bell,” “The Wonder Years,” and “Married with Children.”
His first recurring role was from 2003 until 2004 when he played the role of Jason Dean in, “Charmed.” In 2006, he appeared in “X-Men: The Last Stand,” and in 2008, “Marley and Me.”
He portrayed Dr. McSteamy on the ABC medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy” from 2006 until 2012 when he was killed off the show. He did return in 2021 for a guest appearance.
He continued acting starring as Captain Tom Chandler in the TNT series, “The Last Ship,” from 2014-2018. He most recently starred as Cal Jacobs on the HBO drama “Euphoria.”
After announcing his ALS diagnosis in 2025, Dane advocated for ALS awareness. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, actress and model, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie Beatrice and Georgia Geraldine, which his obituary referred to as, “The center of his world.”
