HOLLYWOOD—As summer continues to dwindle down, the notion of a repeat winner at the box-office has constantly shifted. Two weeks ago “The Lion King” was victorious, last week it was “Hobbs & Shaw” and this week “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” came close to the top spot at theaters with audiences flocking for a scare. The horror flick produced by Oscar-winner Guillermo del Toro debuted in second place with $20.8 million.
So “Hobbs & Shaw” maintained its grip with audiences at the top spot with $25.4 million. After two weeks in theaters, “Hobbs & Shaw” has earned over $108 million at the domestic box-office. “The Lion King” dropped to third place with $20 million, as the live-action flick edges closer to crossing the $500 million mark at the domestic box-office.
There was another live-action animated series that hit the big screen this past weekend, as “Dora and the Lost City of Gold” debuted in fourth place with $17 million. Rounding out the top five was Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” with $11.6 million. Tarantino’s latest flick has now crossed the $100 million mark. The other new debut of the weekend, “The Kitchen” starring Elisabeth Moss, Melissa McCarthy and Tiffany Haddish bombed with audiences with a dismal $5.5 million to land in seventh place.
This weekend sees the release of the raunchy comedy “Good Boys” and the thriller “47 Meters Down: Uncaged.” Do I see either giving “Hobbs & Shaw” a run for its money at the box-office? It’s quite possible, but to be honest, next weekend should be quite interesting at the box-office.
