SANTA MONICA—Around 2:30 p.m. on June 22, the Santa Monica Police Department’s Crisis Negotiation Team responded to reports of a person experiencing a mental health crisis at the Santa Monica Mall, an outdoor shopping center at the south end of Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade.
At 5:15 p.m., the SMPD released an update stating that the incident noting a person was taken into custody, sustained no injuries, and was transported to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation.
During the incident, the negotiation team was assisted by patrol officers and firefighters from the Santa Monica Fire Department, who had been dispatched to help de-escalate the situation. The area around the Santa Monica Mall, including the northbound side of 2nd Street between Santa Monica Boulevard and Colorado Avenue, was reopened to the public.
The SMPD thanked the public for their patience and cooperation during the de-escalation. The SMPD asks anyone experiencing mental health issues seek help by calling or texting 988, which connects them to trained counselors, or, in case of an emergency, call 911.
No other details about the individual have been disclosed to the public.
