On January 7th, a Honda CRV, traveling at a high rate of speed, collided with a 2023 Freightliner traveling at 55 mph on Hwy 223 and Wible Road in Bakersfield. The driver of the Honda failed to stop at the stop sign. He was pronounced dead at the scene. It hasn’t been determined if alcohol or drugs were involved in the incident. This was just one of many recent accidents in Bakersfield involving trucks.

In January, a massive accident involving more than 40 vehicles shut down a section of Highway 58 in Bakersfield. Investigators believe that a contributing factor may have been dense fog. The pileup closed off State Route 58 eastbound lanes, east of Tower Line Road, for several hours. Nine people were hospitalized. Witnesses reported dense fog in the area before the accident. A California Department of Transportation camera showed foggy, whiteout conditions close to where the accident occurred.

Growth Leads to Busier Freeways

Bakersfield has experienced enormous growth in a few decades. Lower housing costs have attracted new residents from Ventura and Los Angeles counties. More industry has been drawn to Bakersfield for its lower-cost open areas. The city’s prime location in the San Joaquin Valley makes it a significant hub for transportation. Tanker trucks, big rigs, and delivery trucks travel on the local freeways and Interstate 5. Residents sharing the road with commercial traffic means a higher risk of accidents involving trucks.

Trucks and Agricultural Equipment

One of the distinctive challenges for Bakersfield drivers is that the extensive truck and agricultural equipment on the roads poses complex issues. It’s always a good idea to give commercial vehicles plenty of space. Due to their size, they need a lot more room to navigate and have larger blind spots. Trucks have different visibility standards and travel at high rates of speed, which increases the risk of collisions. Peak times on weekends and nighttime driving may account for more truck accidents on Bakersfield roads, especially with more younger and senior drivers on the roads during those hours.

Big Rig Dangers

In 2024, Bakersfield saw 63 serious truck accidents, resulting in 2 fatalities. Whether you’re traveling on the roads in Bakersfield or anywhere else, it’s always advisable to give large commercial vehicles plenty of space. Due to their size, they need a lot of space to come to a complete stop. Although accidents involving trucks can occur for a variety of reasons, these are the most common:

Federal law allows commercial drivers to drive for 11 hours per shift. Driver fatigue can occur when drivers ignore the rules due to deadlines. A driver may speed or fall asleep at the wheel, causing disastrous consequences.

Truck drivers may get distracted by using their phones on the road. The problem is the sheer size of many trucks could cause a driver to lose control and be involved in a serious accident.

Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is as much of a lethal threat as distracted driving.

Some truck accidents are caused by faulty brakes or poor vehicle maintenance. A blown tire can cause a driver to lose control and cause a devastating accident.

A load is supposed to be safely secured on a commercial truck. An unsecured load is dangerous for everyone on the road.

California has its share of sunny days. However, mist, fog, and occasionally ice can cause a truck to swerve or hyroplane out of control.

Conclusion

Like many areas in California, population growth and industry have contributed to busier roads and more dangerous interactions with large trucks. Tragic injuries and deaths have occurred on Bakersfield roads. The California Vehicle Code provides regulations that influence driver behavior and accident prevention. Enforcement can have a significant effect on reducing accident rates. California law enforcement utilizes strategies that target specific situations that lead to high-risk situations.
