BEVERLY HILLS—The Beverly Hills Police Department (BHPD) will be hosting an opportunity for the public to turn in prescription drugs on Saturday, October 26.
The BHPD and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) are providing the public a way to prevent pill abuse and theft by hosting a National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day event in front of the Beverly Hills Public Library at 444 N. Rexford Drive, according to a press release from the City of Beverly Hills.
Those wishing to participate can drop off unwanted pills at the collection site free of charge and no questions asked.
The DEA has had three previous National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day events in Los Angeles, which yielded more than 40,000 pounds of medicine turned in by residents at more than 120 sites run by federal, state and local law enforcement officials.
These events provide a way for the public to safely dispose of unused medicines that may create a way for diversion, misuse and abuse. Studies show that rates of drug abuse, accidental poisonings and overdoses are on the rise in the U.S., with a majority of those drugs being obtained from family and friends.
“In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines, flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash, pose potential safety hazards,” stated the press release.
