MALIBU—The city of Malibu announced on September 25 that the National Weather Service forecasts hazardous beach conditions, coastal flooding and potential beach erosion in Malibu from Saturday, September 26 through Wednesday, September 30, due to effects from Hurricanes Polo and Odalys.
The hurricanes are not expected to directly impact the Malibu coast. They are expected to contribute to strong waves, while higher ocean levels associated with a warm-water Kelvin wave will coincide with very high tides above 7 feet on September 27, 28 and 29.
NWS warns that significant beach erosion is likely, along with possible shallow seawater flooding over low-lying beach walkways and parking lots and localized damage in the most vulnerable and exposed areas, particularly south-facing beaches. Hazardous beach conditions may include dangerous rip currents, powerful breaking waves, beach erosion and debris in the water.
Stay off rocks and jetties. Inexperienced swimmers and surfers are asked to stay out of the water. If entering the water, stay near a staffed lifeguard station and check with lifeguards about current conditions. Never allow children in the water unsupervised.
Beachfront property owners are urged to inspect their properties for potential structural issues, check drainage, review insurance policies and take protective measures against coastal erosion.
