SANTA MONICA—At 2:54 p.m. on August 12, the Santa Monica Police Department announced they will conduct a Driving Under the Influence Checkpoint on August 14 from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m.
The operation will run from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., but the location where it will take place will not be disclosed to the public. Its purpose is to promote public safety by apprehending suspected impaired drivers, and the location is selected based on available data on driver-related crashes.
The SMPD wants members of the public to be aware that alcohol, along with over-the-counter drugs, prescription medication, and medicinal and recreational marijuana, can impair one’s ability to drive. Driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal in the city of Santa Monica.
The operation is funded by a grant that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration provided to the California Office of Traffic Safety.
